ONE MORE HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

The Romeo and Enrica Invernizzi Foundation and the State University of Milan created the Center for Pediatric Research on 30 September 2016.

Once again pursuing its commitment to supporting research, the Romeo and Enrica Invernizzi Foundation, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of its legal recognition, has generously financed the development of the Romeo and Enrica Invernizzi Center for Pediatric Research.

The structure

Within the ASST Fatebenefratelli Sacco and in collaboration with the V. Buzzi Children's Hospital, the Research Center offers 700 m2 of laboratories equipped with the most modern instruments for the study of cellular, molecular and structural biology at the service of a new approach of personalized medicine for pediatric patients.

Professor Gianvincenzo Zuccotti, Director of the Department of Pediatrics at the V. Buzzi Children's Hospital, holds the role of scientific coordinator of the Centre.

Innovation and research

Create an integrated scientific network and a center of excellence for basic, translational and clinical research in the following areas of interest: Type I Diabetes, Bacterial Genomics, regenerative therapies for congenital malformation pathologies, rare metabolic and neurological diseases.

The Center constitutes a unique cutting-edge center for integrated multi-disciplinary basic, translational and clinical research: this guarantees young patients not only quality but also cutting-edge care in terms of transferability of results.

The Centre, which works in close connection with the V. Buzzi Children's Hospital and which is also available to other Italian pediatric institutions, allows Milan to reach international levels of excellence, also for pediatric care.

La fondazione
FOUNDATION ROMEO AND ENRICA INVERNIZZI

The Romeo and Enrica Invernizzi Foundation was founded in the early nineties by will of the Cavaliere del Lavoro Romeo Invernizzi, one of the most brilliant and innovative entrepreneurs in the Italian food industry, and his wife Enrica Pessina, a constant presence in Milanese social life, for provide a point of reference in Lombard scientific research and promote the progress and well-being of society through knowledge.

By statute, the Foundation has always supported initiatives in the study of Economics, Food Sciences and Medicine and Surgery.

The collaboration with three important Milanese universities (State University, Catholic University and Bocconi University) has led in recent years to financing numerous research projects and encouraging the activity of researchers of international importance.

TEAM
Fiorina GROUP
THE INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR TYPE I DIABETES

Led by Professor Paolo Fiorina, this team intends to explore innovative lines of research focused on the treatment of type 1 diabetes and its complications, prevention strategies, new cell replacement therapies, and application of new technologies.

The goal is to become a Center of Excellence and reference for clinical and experimental studies nationally and internationally for type 1 diabetes.

Bandi Group
GENOMICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL EPIDEMIOLOGY PLATFORM

The group coordinated by Prof. Claudio Bandi deals with:

pathogenic microorganisms; microbial communities such as the human gut microbiota; arthropod vectors of infectious diseases; microorganisms that can be used as vaccine platforms or as a source of immunomodulating post-biotics.

Specifically, the study of pathogenic microorganisms is carried out using genomic methodologies with the aim of reconstructing spreading patterns and epidemic outbreaks, and identifying virulence and pathogenicity factors.

Investigations of the microbiota aim to highlight the association and possible role of certain components of the microbiota in the genesis of pathological changes.

In the field of entomology, the study of vector insects (particularly mosquitoes) has the dual purpose of monitoring the presence of species involved in the transmission of pathogens to humans, and developing new control methodologies.

Cereda Group
STUDY RESEARCH ON RARE DISEASES

The group’s interests are mainly devoted to the development of two lines of research related to the study of rare diseases by taking an interest in metabolic and neurological diseases.

Activities are focused on studying the pathogenetic mechanisms involved in the above conditions using primary cell models derived from tissue, iPSCs, and cell lines.

The group is multidisciplinary with biologists, biotechnologists, bioengineers and bioinformaticians channeling their specific activities into available omics platforms (genomics, transcriptomics and metabolomics).

The study of pathogenetic mechanisms also enables the development of advanced therapies for the treatment of rare diseases.

Pelizzo Group
PEDIATRIC SURGICAL CLINIC

The group, coordinated by Prof. Gloria Pelizzo, focused its studies on translational research as an indispensable goal to bridge the gap between basic research and clinical application in pediatric surgery.

In particular, molecular mechanisms useful in regenerative therapies of congenital malformative disorders are being researched.

The group can offer comprehensive support for the translation of laboratory research findings into clinical applications aimed at improving the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of pediatric surgical diseases.

The integration of basic research techniques with application in daily clinical practice plays a key role in the development of personalized therapies and the advancement of clinical practice.
